CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

WHITNEY

Whitney left the cottage feeling lonely. Dani and Brad were so in love they didn’t even notice the people around them. And if she wasn’t mistaken, both Aaron and Cooper were falling for Taylor. Not that Taylor seemed aware of it. She was relatively innocent in the ways of romance. Maybe that’s what Cooper was here to help Taylor with, so her writing seemed more authentic.

As Whitney pulled into the driveway, she could hear Mindy bark a greeting. She hadn’t wanted to bring the dog to the cottage for fear she’d end up in the lake. Pirate was constantly in the water, and knowing Mindy, she’d want to be in there too.

She opened the front door of the house. Laughing at how excited Mindy was to see her, Whitney swept the dog up into her arms and accepted Mindy’s kisses on her cheeks.

“How’s my girl?” cooed Whitney, giving her a last hug before setting the dachshund down on the floor and heading to the patio for the umbrella.

The landline rang, but she let it go. They’d been plagued by robot crank calls lately. If anyone important needed her attention, they knew to call her cell.

She grabbed the umbrella, wrestled it to the car, and left.

Back at the cottage, the group was spread out lying or sitting on the blankets and eating grapes and apples.

Aaron stood. “Here, let me get that umbrella for you. Where do you want it?”

Whitney pointed out a spot next to the blanket nearby and, together, they worked the pole into a soft spot in the ground.

Dani walked over and handed her an apple. “Do you mind sharing the shade? I think I’ve had enough sun for today, but I don’t want to leave the lake.”

Whitney patted the blanket next to her. “Have a seat.”

“It’s been a nice day,” said Dani. “It’s brought back so many memories of past summers. Have you enjoyed yourself?”

“Yes,” Whitney responded. “It feels good to get back to basics. I’ve needed this time away from California. I feel better, stronger, healthier.”

Dani put an arm around her. “I’ve loved having you here. We lost touch for a while.”

“I’ve felt that loss too,” Whitney said. Her cell rang, but Whitney didn’t even look to see who was calling. She wanted nothing to interrupt this time with her sister.

Dani’s cell chimed with a news release. She stretched to where she’d laid it on the blanket next to them. “Wonder what’s going on in the world.”

“Don’t bother,” said Whitney. “Let’s not ruin this day.”

Dani picked the phone up, studied the screen, and grew still.

“What is it?” said Whitney.

“You’re going to want to see this, but first check your phone,” said Dani.

“Dani, tell me what’s wrong,” said Whitney feeling her stomach squeeze with worry. Her sister’s face had gone white for a moment.

“It’s Zane,” Dani said. “He’s in a coma from an overdose.”

Whitney felt her breath leave her in a rush, making her feel dizzy. “He’s alive?”

“Check your phone. You probably have more information than I do.
